Hot Fudge Pudding Cake

If  you like hot fudge, and pudding, and desserts like hot fudge sundaes, and warm brownies with hot fudge on them, then this may be just what you need. It’s one of the best combinations of textures and flavors I’ve ever come across.

Picture smooth, creamy hot fudge pudding, combined with chocolate brownie/cake parts. It’s actually a combination of brownie and cake, with a chewiness about halfway between them. It’s hard to explain, but it will definitely have you going back for seconds.

This recipe isn’t mine, by the way. My wife found it in a 1987 Hershey’s® magazine supplement, which she has saved and used ever since. She knows how much I love it, so this has popped up on my birthday many times (quite possibly because I requested it).

The good news… If you do baking, most of the ingredients are items you may already have around the house.

This is one dessert you never see in restaurants – and they have no idea what they’re missing!

Hot Fudge Pudding Cake

1-1/4 cups sugar, divided 3/4 and 1/2 cups
1 cup all-purpose flour
7 tablespoons HERSHEY’S® Cocoa, divided 3 and 4 Tbs
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup milk
1/3 cup butter or margarine, melted
1-1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
1-1/4 cups hot water

Heat oven to 350 degrees.

In medium mixing bowl, combine the following ingredients:

 3/4 cup sugar
1 cup all-purpose flour
3 tablespoons HERSHEY’s Cocoa
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt

Blend the following ingredients into the above mixing bowl until smooth:

1/2 cup milk
1/3 cup butter or margarine, melted
1-1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Pour batter into square pan 8x8x2 or 9x9x2 inches

In small bowl, combine the following remaining ingredients:

1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
4 tablespoons HERSHEY’s Cocoa

Sprinkle mixture evenly over batter

Pour hot water over top, but DO NOT STIR

Bake 40 minutes, or until top is almost set

Let cool 15 minutes before serving.

Spoon into dessert dishes, and be sure to include all of the sauce from bottom of pan. Just spoon it over the top.

Optionally,  a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream on top makes this even better.

Enjoy, and let me know how you like it.

  1. Oh. Wow. this is DANGEROUS! that looks so good, the next time i get off my diet, i am definitely going to make this 🙂
i am curious though, have you tried making it without hershey’s brand cocoa?

    1. I think we have always used Hershey’s brand, Ethan, but you can always give it a try with whatever you have available.

  2. You are right Bart. Most of these ingredients ARE already in my kitchen. Just missing the Hershey. I am a big fan of all things chocolate and I can’t believe they haven’t serve anything like this in the restaurant! 🙂

  3. Hey Bart,
